Bug ID: 444974 Summary: Feature request: Configuration files that can be managed as text Product: systemsettings Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS: Unspecified Status: REPORTED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org Reporter: jeffbrown....@gmail.com Target Milestone: --- # The wish I would like to manage Plasma configuration via text files rather than the GUI. That way one could copy the text file to a new machine, as opposed to spending around an hour clicking through the Settings. One could even try out someone else's settings -- something that's not practical when it takes a lot of work to change them. # What doesn't work I tried blindly copying all my KDE config files once, and it broke Plasma. According to someone on the NixOS forum[1] that's to be expected, because KDE config files are a mix of human-readable and machine-generated text. # Scope A number of people on that NixOS forum wish for the same thing. There are a few other apps to which the same issue applies -- off the top of my head, Dolphin and Konsole. But at least for me, the lion's share of the configuration work for a new system is in configuring Plasma itself. I believe this applies to all versions of Plasma on all flavors of Linux.
