That would also explain the behavior. Also, if I quit digikam while it is hung up on such an issue, the process doesn't actually end until the statement is closed. (Of course that would also be the case if the issue is with the db. Hence my suggestion that I'll try and update the db version.) Btw.: The other issue (thumbnails silently being saved into a SQLite DB) seems to have happened because I had a folder in my home folder which had the same name as the db (photos). Funnily this issues is a fix for the actual issue of this bug report.
