I assume that you are using the flatpak version?
(I'm assuming this, since kasts can't be compiled with the qt and kde that you
mentioned below.  It's also not packaged for ubuntu as far as I can see,
either.)

This sounds like a keyring problem: kasts will first try to save the password
to the current keyring through "secret service"; if that doesn't succeed it
will save the password into a local file.  In principle it should fall back
gracefully.
Are you using a keyring like kde wallet, gnome keyring or keepass(xc)?  Or do
you get popups to open a keyring when you enter the gpodder password in kasts?
