I have the same problem with files on a mounted cifs drive.

I noticed that the thumbnail function works for files up to 1.5GB in size. As
soon as the files are 1.6GB or larger, no thumbnail is created.

It does not matter which thumbnail function it is. With the movies via
ffmpegThumbs or with a third party plugin (MovieThumbs) it is exactly the same
behavior.

In the Dolphin setting I have set the maximum of 9999999 MB for "Skip previews
for remote files above". However, this does not affect the limit of 1.5/1.6GB.
If I enter a "0" in the field, then this already has an effect, then no
thumbnail is created for any file (remote).
