It's quite noticeable and wastes a lot of space. (True, for some cases this avoids this bug.) The attached screenshot compares the input of Bug 365116 with and without this workaround (for two different fonts). As noted in the commit itself this is not a proper fix, and the lines still get cut of as seen in line 4 of the screenshot (underscore not visible). Therefore I think this Bug should be reopened.
