Bug ID: 460843
Summary: Transparent top panel don't have transparency
randomly after startup
Classification: Plasma
Product: lattedock
Version: git (master)
Platform: Manjaro
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: application
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
***
In 30-40% of time, when starting the system, the upper panel with systray,
appmenu, title and buttons has composition off. In the result, all transparency
settings are not working, and the panel is fully opaque. In the same time, the
dock with quicklaunch and start is behaving correctly. In order to fix that, I
have to close latte and restart it. In 99% cases it opens it with transparent
panel (as per settings). Once I even deleted the panel and created it anew and
the panel had transparency, so latte doesn't have to be restarted to regain
composition (transparency) effect. However, when trying to change settings in a
current, not-transparent panel, they simply don't work and there is no reaction
from the panel, showing that following settings is compromised, not the
composition itself.
The random nature of this bug suggests some race conditions during startup.
Only once or twice it happened that after manual restart the transparency
wasn't fixed. The issue is present over 6-10 months, so there were hundreds of
startups.
I tried to change from git version to the repo version (Manjaro) but the issue
was present there as well.
After some bigger Plasma updates, I always recompile widgets: appmenu, title
and buttons, along with the latte-dock. Unfortunately, this only lowers the
chance of this bug happening, but not preventing it.
Frankly, this is a highly annoying bug. I just can't stand it and have to
manually close and start latte every time it happens. When the bug is happening
every day, I do this every day. Latte starts to feel like a chore.
Additionally, when there is a secondary monitor, sometimes the panel on the
primary or secondary screen also looses transparency. This is the same panel,
because it is set to be cloned on all monitors (so there is no separate panel).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Have upper panel with: buttons, title, appmeny, systray.
2. Start the system. Sometimes everything is OK, sometimes not. Sometimes the
transparency is gone almost most of the time I start the system, sometimes it
can be days till I get this issue.
3.
OBSERVED RESULT
The upper panel is not transparent.
EXPECTED RESULT
The upper dock should be transparent.
