Ah, I can add the following:

I was about to try to recreate the task, and found that it had, in face, been
created, despite the crash.  However, the due date was wrong:  before the crash
I had it set to be due on Nov. 11th, but start on Nov. 7th.  Instead, it was
created with both dates set to Nov. 7th.  Also, the access was set to "public"
instead of "private".  Everything else was as I had set it, though.  It's
almost as if it crashed part-way through overwriting the defaults with my
custom values (does that mesh with how calendar event creation actually
works?).
