            Bug ID: 462466
Summary: Plasma-nm cannot initiate connection with MBIM WWAN
                    modem
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: plasma-nm
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Debian testing
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
          Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
          Reporter: onit...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When using plasma-nm to initiate a connection to an LTE network with a WWAN
modem that uses the MBIM device interface, it's not possible to initiate an
internet connection.
Creating and configuring the device works, and it's possible to power the modem
down and (which causes autoregistration on the mobile network), but the data
connection fails.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a new "Mobile broadband" connection in the Plasma-nm network
connection editor
2. Enable the modem and initiate network registration by checking the "Enable
mobile network" checkbox in the tray app
3. Establish an internet connection by clicking the "Connect..." button

OBSERVED RESULT
After clicking the "Connect..." button, an error is displayed:
"Failed to activate XXX: Activation failed because the device is unmanaged"

There also seem to be issues with PIN code handling. Sending the SIM PIN code
via mmcli or disabling the PIN works.

EXPECTED RESULT
1. The mobile broadband connection succeeds
2. The network interface is configured for internet use (IP address, default
gateway and DNS servers)

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Debian testing, KDE 5.26.0
KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.98.0
Qt Version: 5.15.6

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
In the new connection wizard, there is neither a mention of "LTE", "4G" or
"5G", nor "UMTS", "3G" or "CDMA2000". This is not a huge issue, but can be
confusing to users.

MBIM devices do not seem to have any means to fetch IP configuration, except
through the MBIM interface. Apparently, some device drivers emulate DHCP or
some operators send DHCP packets, but this is not case for the tested LTE
modem/operator combination. Obtaining the IP configuration via mbimcli works
perfectly.

The "unmanaged" error seems to be something else though, I don't see any
message in the ModemManager logs when plasma-nm fails to connect.
