Yes, we don't read the orientations flag at the moment, because it would only be possible to rotate the image correctly with metadata. The metadata makes a GPhoto2 connection really slow and is also no longer needed in digiKam-8.0.0 for correct date folders and other things during import. Also, we only keep about 200 thumbnails in cache (the import thumbnails are not in the DB, only in RAM). So they are always reloaded when scrolling and would have to be rotated again each time.
