You can register a dedicate collection in the digiKam database storing all your files that you needs. Using PNG format will be the best choice, but it's not necessary. WebP for ex must work as expected with better size compression ratio that PNG due to use wavelets compression. Q: did you try the last 8.0.0 release ?
