I figured out what triggers the issue.

If you play the video file directly from a SMB network share, Haruna doesn't
seem to look in the SMB folder the video is playing from to check if there is a
subtitle file.

If you copy the video file and the srt file from the SMB network share to the
local drive and then play it, it sees and uses the subtitle file.
