            Bug ID: 473108
Summary: Baloo should restrict itself to basic indexing when
the system is running off a battery
    Classification: Frameworks and Libraries
           Product: frameworks-baloo
           Version: 5.108.0
          Platform: Fedora RPMs
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
          Assignee: baloo-bugs-n...@kde.org
          Reporter: ngomp...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
Baloo's content indexing mode significantly impairs battery life, making KDE
look way more energy hungry than it should be. This is because Baloo goes full
throttle regardless of whether the computer is on AC power or battery (either
laptop or UPS battery). This behavior is not good for energy conservation and
extending the battery life.

Please consider changing Baloo to be responsive to power source modes and power
profiles.

OBSERVED RESULT
Baloo does content indexing on battery power, reducing battery life
significantly.

EXPECTED RESULT
Baloo should restrict to basic indexing when on battery to conserve power and
backfill with context indexing when on AC power.

Perhaps on systems with a mix of performance and efficiency cores (Intel and
ARM CPUs when available), Baloo could pin itself to efficiency cores to
significantly reduce energy usage while doing full indexing.

Baloo should also switch to basic indexing when the power saver power profile
is used.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Fedora Linux 38 (KDE Plasma)
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.108.0
Qt Version: 5.15.10

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Arch Asahi disables content indexing to conserve energy on battery mode, and
we're contemplating pulling this over to Fedora Asahi Remix if there's no fix
in sight.
