Exiv2 also has a memory reader? We could use QIODevice to load the file into memory. I think I saw a bug report on Exiv2 about the memory reader, but I can't find it at the moment. We have a pretty good ExifTool engine, I think it would also be possible to gradually port more and more functions natively to ExifTool. I'll test the QIODevice thing this evening.
