Running tests now in 2 albuns with half a dozen pictures (PNG and JPG) I could not prove metadata is being written to files. The face rectangles are still missing in some images after changing tags but reading the metadata recreates them. When I first stumbled on the issue I had changed tags in hundreds of files. So it can be that both occurs for I have checked a few images with exiftool and tags were missing on the files.
