--- Comment #10 from Nate Graham <n...@kde.org> ---
For years, our party line was that we only use app icons and not window icons,
because window icons aren't supported on Wayland.

However that's changing soon, meaning both platforms will have feature parity
the the technical objection becomes invalid.

If we do end up displaying window icons, we'll have to be careful, for a number
of reasons:
1. Not all windows set window icons, so some windows will still show app icons.
2. Some window icons are ugly low resolution pixmaps that look bad on light or
dark themes.
3. The case where a launcher transforms into a Task becomes awkward, since the
launcher will always show the app icon, but when it transforms into a Task, if
the Task's window has a window icon, it will change into that, which could be
unexpected and look bad
4. We wouldn't want to show window icons at all in the always-use-grouping mode
of the Icons-Only Task Manager because it's designed to represent tasks as
instances of apps, rather than as discrete windows. So whether it shows window
icons or not would change depending on whether grouping is enabled or disabled,
and what type of Task Manager it is.
5. Some people just don't like seeing window icons in their Task Managers; see
bug reports like Bug 192932.

None of these are insurmountable issues to overcome, but it would require
careful design to avoid becoming incoherent, ugly, or feeling arbitrary and
buggy to users who can't grasp the patterns behind why things are the way they
are.

Anyway, re-opening for consideration since soon we won't be no longer blocked
technically. I recall an old bug report asking for this, but I can't find it
right now. If I do, I'll probably re-open it and mark this as a duplicate of
it.
