After further research, I've found that there is as "ORGANIZER:" line item in all offending entries which was set to mattz_email... whereas all items/events that respond correctly did not have an "ORGANIZER:" line item entry. I have no idea where these items originated. I went into the .ics file and deleted all entries with ORGANIZER line (and re-entered in calendar) and now everything seems to be working ok.
