I've worked with Robert Ancell a lot (the main developer upstream) he's absolutely awesome. There have been some API changes in the past based on my comments.
Being honest, their mailing list and official communication channels are a bit poor, especially about upcoming plans, however that's true of almost every upstream. From my personal experience easily more open than Collabora and Telepathy. They have a solid review process, no-one commits without a review and anyone is eligible to submit something to review. I can even review said patches with my LightDM-upstream hat on if I wanted to. Dave > Cheers, > Albert
