That was an attempt to wean giflib entirely off of the patches stored in Dude and the Solaris-giflib tarball (which is generated out of Dude) and to do things 'JDS style'; it shows up some of the inconsistencies in naming variables, which is what borkened stuff. I don't know if this weaning is entirely useful, though, as it duplicates patches into the specfiles repo -- it depends on how much maintainence is going on in Dude. For stable packages, it might be: it reduces the number of source tarballs to download and makes more transparent what the patches are that are going to be applied.
