All, encouraged by Adriaan's recent post (which I cannot find :-() indicating a "forthcoming blog post", I found http://blogs.fsfe.org/adridg/?p=97 and once again installed KDE via IPS.
The machine is a U40 w 8GB RAM, the graphics card is a NV37GL [Quadro PCI-E Series], I'm using version 173.14.18 of the NVDAgraphics* drivers. After I log in and click the "main menu" button, all I see is a window frame in black, but no contents - just the background. I can see the contents of "desktop properties" or whatever menues I get when I right-click on the taskbar, but left-click only produces said frame.
