Does konsole even do its own transparency in KDE4? I've seen it being
transparent and just assumed it was kwin doing its compositing tricks.

The transparency and compositing code needs a good hard look at: even on my
home system, with nvidia drivers and whatever nastiness is delivered with
nv83, I don't get kwin doing effects because the necessary X extensions
(Damage, Render) are missing. So this is one you can hunt down and nail
yourself (just start looking for transparency code in Konsole itself, bool
transparencyAvailable = KWindowSystem::compositingActive() for instance and
then figuring out what that is returning and why).
