Well, from what i've seen, no matter how we twist our targets around, we still
end up having to supplement some of the missing puzzle pieces. Or at least
rebuild and use a more recent version than the ones available.
Like Ben was saying, osol2008.05 is missing ICU, S10U{4,5} are missing HAL, and
so on.
In final analysis, the actual differences between versions or releases are
significant in terms of functionality, but rather small in terms of the number
of components creating the differences (compared to the large number of
components which aren't there in either version of S10U++, SXDE/SXCE or
osol2008.05, and which need the FOSS versions).
So far, this is manageable IMHO, for the time being -- we could add a script
which figures out, before one starts building FOSS/KDE4, what needs to be built
(FOSS-wise), and what needs to be omitted from the build, because it's already
there, based on the flavor of the release.
As to what will eventually go into an IPS repository, that will be either based
on a well-defined OSOL release, with known components, specs and expectations,
or it could even be a self-contained, KDE4-based distro. The nice thing would
be
to be able to accommodate both camps.
