Interesting. I'll have to give that a try, because my X1200 (on-board) is horrifically slow at many things; that doesn't take away that we (for some value of we) should look into the slowness more analytically at some point. Perhaps plasma (applet handle fade-in!) and/or konsole (resize speed!) are doing things they really shouldn't be. I was going to test an ATI X3870, but it turns out to be unsupported by my motherboard; doesn't show up on the PCI busses at all. So I can't tell how much of the performance issues I'm seeing are related to the video hardware itself. Anyway, I think this fiddling-arounbd-with-drivers thread is wandering off- topic for the list; you might want to add some conclusions to a KDE techbase page related to the KDE4-Solaris project page, so that we can pooint new users to it more easily.
