yasm is probably on the fringe of needed software. Most programs tend to use the C compiler's built in asm support to do what they need to. Though unfortunately, most of them use GNU syntax which makes life difficult. I used yasm a few years ago, and nasm many years before that. However, it has been a while since I ran into a piece of software that needed it. I would say that this is best kept as an optional component that we don't bother with.
