Allow me to answer this... See http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Optimize-Options.html . There are options to set the cache size on gcc, and like Sun's compiler you don't have to use them. My original question was why that value and not any other. The answer was to prevent cache trashing on lower spec systems. That makes sense if you package software for distribution, you target a minimum acceptable hardware. I'm not shipping mine, thus I can use higher specs.
