It is still valid. I can reproduce the problem on RC1. Fix for 184465 (kcheckpass) was a prerequisite - running /opt/kde4/lib/kde4/libexec/kcheckpass from the command line and providing the correct password didn't fail anymore. But it didn't solve the issue seen in screen lock (race condition?).
