Summary: wish -wiki like khelp system
           Product: docs
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Ubuntu Packages
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: kde-doc-english kde org
        ReportedBy: locklin.jason gmail com

Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

The integrated khelp that works with each part of the kde desktop is rather
limited and unused. It appears to be a very close copy of the Windows help
system (which is useless). How often do you find yourself opening a web
browser to investigate a problem? newbies would be much better assisted by a
very in-depth and extensive help system.

The problem is that Developers have to write the help. Unless you code for
KDE, it is quite unlikely that you contribute to the khelp system. (for
example, how many people on the documentation team know 0 programming
languages?? - probably not many, how many people who use KDE don't know how to
program? - a large percentage)

What if the khelp system was basically an integrated wiki... You could hit F1
anywhere in kde and find extensive explenation. When something was missing,
you could easily fix or extend it -right from within the help window.

note: it may be required to have some sort of a "local cache" system so that
khelp would still work offline.

Why do it like windows?? why not do it the open/web2.0 way? programmers would
never half to write help files again! and users wouldn't have to go fishing for
webforums or wiki's online to get standard information.
