Thanks for the info.  I will keep that in mind for future reference.
However, I don't have the time to learn how to set all that up right
now, and I suspect only a small percentage of people are going to have
both the skill and time to implement such measures.

Besides, I am not sure if your filter configuration is why you do not
get spam on the other lists your are subscribed to (I guess it is if
you don't get spam on the kde-freebsd list).  I just skimmed through
the mailing list archives for this month on the FreeBSD web site for a
couple of the higher traffic lists, freebsd-current and
freebsd-questions, and I did not notice any spam.

They do say in their FAQ:

    ... due to past abuse by some individuals, certain lists now
    have a policy where postings from non-subscribers must be manually
    screened to ensure that they are appropriate.

So I assume the lists I sampled are either screening non-subscriber
posts or they are using much more adequate filtering measures.  Either
way they appear to be blocking the spam.
