Title: KDE install and run

G'Day, All.

Please forgive me as I ask these questions.  I have been playing around with FreeBSD 5.3 and finally got it installed.  I believe I have the general installation down.  However, I am having problems with running KDE.  I installed KDE and had walked through the handbook http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/book.html#X11-WM attempting to get it installed and kept receiving an error message:

"kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server" when using the startkde command.

Since then I have attempted to deinstall and upgrade to KDE 3.4.0, according to directions on http://freebsd.kde.org/,  without success.  Even tried pkg_add -r kde3.4.0.  I have googled around trying to find solutions but to no avail.

So after all that rambling I have 2 questions:

1. What is the best way to clean up this mess that I have created by deinstalling and attempting to upgrade?

2. How does one go about installing KDE properly and getting rid of the error messages so that it will start when running startkde?

If there are clear cut directions out there, please point me in that direction. I can follow them.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Dana
