Please use the sequence make && make install && make clean instead. Doing make 
install right away does not work correctly with x11/kde3's menu and you might 
end up installing more parts of KDE than you opted to.

Well, you will have to find out what the real error is (or at least make it 
visible in the log) before anyone can make an educated guess. Try going 
into /usr/ports/x11-wm/kompmgr directly and do a make clean && make there and 
see if you get more output. 

Alternatively, you can also just use a binary package of kompmgr: set an 
environment variable PACKAGESITE to 
ftp://ftp2.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5-stable/Latest/ and 
do pkg_add -r kdebase-kompmgr
