It's very probably bad interaction between akode and noatun in some way. 
Noatun has been deteriorating ever since KDE 3.4.0 - in KDE 3.4.1 sound 
stopped working in it for movie files (.mov, .avi) and now it's completely 
silent (I didn't notice before since I've given up on trying to use noatun).

I meant to file a bugreport on the sound issue with movies, but forgot - can 
you file one for this latest issue of no-sound-at-all at http://bugs.kde.org 
and mail the number it gets assigned here so we can track it?

Kaboodle still works fine both for movie and music files btw.
