Just to say thank you all for your suggestions with regard to my
problem of the login screen appearing again after entering a password.
Michael Nottebrock's comment about ensuring that the hostname was set
fixed the problem immediately after the machine was plugged into the
network (and the appropriate hostname, broadcast, inet, router and
nameserver details were entered in /etc/hosts and /etc/rc.conf).
