To answer your question though: Technically, this is a shortcoming of 
Konqueror's netscape plugin compatibility and thus a KDE bug (other browsers 
trying to be compatible with netscape plugins, like opera, have the same 
problem). On the other hand, libxpcom is really a mozilla (post Netscape 4.x) 
invention, thus it might be argued that mplayer-plugin really is a 
mozilla-plugin and as such, not supported.

In any case, there's probably no other workaround than copying the library 
into the runtime linker path at the moment. You might try filing a bug (or a 
wish) against Konqueror at http://bugs.kde.org to provide a libxpcom.so 
compatibility stub as part of netscape plugin support.
