Are you using a display manager like kdm/gdm/xdm to log on? If so, all
output from the X session goes into ~/.xsession-errors.

If that yields no clues, try logging in to a failsafe session (or
replace startkde with xterm in ~/.xinitrc if you are not using a display
manager) and run startkde from that xterm.
