You'd have to recompile the quanta and kdevelop ports anyway (with the
WANT_KDE_DEBUG make variable set), if you wanted to get a closer look at
the crash (i.e. a useful backtrace). Updating doesn't necessarily imply
recompiling either, you could update from binary packages as well.

For what it's worth: KDevelop and Quanta have had known crashbugs in
those versions. Quanta even has known crashbugs in its current version.
However: Does Quanta crash when you just try to open a file? That would
certainly be out of the ordinary and might indicate that there's a
problem somewhere else with your installation.

Finally: You're running FreeBSD 4, which is near its end of life and is
supported less and less by current software.

I strongly suggest considering updating to FreeBSD 5 or FreeBSD 6, since
the current KDE release (3.5.x) will definitely be the last to come to
FreeBSD 4 at all and non-trivial bugs that surface exclusively on
FreeBSD 4 have little chance of being fixed due to a severe lack of
developers still using that platform.
