I think you should file your findings so far as a bug - I don't really
have a clue what's happening there either, but the developers should at
least be able to tell if its a Qt or a KDE issue.

I suggest filing it against "ksmserver" (search for "ksmserver" in the
'Application Selection' part of the bugs.kde.org wizard, this will allow
you to file a bug against that component).
