Hi I have also filed a bug report at kde as bug 149003. It has some similarities to a previous bug report 147358 which happened on a earlier version of Kmail. The bug on the latest version happens less frequentlky but when it does the symptoms are more severe.

They are inclided to suggest this is a freebsd problem (despite evidence that the same problem occurs on linux!!!). They seem pretty insistant that I should seek help from freebsd ports to help identify the cause although I do not know what more I can do apart from providing the gdb trace. Can anyone suggest any additional tests I might run to help trace the source of the bug?
