it's something you wouldn't ever want to do, as "carving out" a module
will invalidate all sha1 references. one can workaround that to some
degree by putting the old sha1s in the commit messages, but that's a
crutch that won't work with many tools.
the one thing which we have found to work without problems is merging
a stand-alone repo into an aggregator module.
