The resulting repository is a "bare repository". It doesn't have a .git 
directory, it has the contents of the .git directory and no working copy. You 
can run git commands on it (did you try?), such as pushing it to a remote 
repository.

If you want to use it locally straight away, you have to clone it to get a 
working copy.
