The easiest way forward for you is to use the build_kdenlive.sh script found on the MLT site.  This will build the current 0.9.10 branch w/ all dependencies in an isolated sandbox on your 14.04 LTS machine.  http://www.mltframework.org/bin/view/MLT/BuildScripts

As I mentioned, your changes should be easily isolated from the bulk of the Kdenlive code.  You should be able to tie things together w/ a simple 'Title-V2' menu selection and button to bring up your mods.  Keep your changes in a separate subdir.  When the KF5 version of Kdenlive is released, you can then migrate your changes to that branch.
