This is a misinterpretation. The quickhelp just gives an example.
The meaning is: you get an abbreviated string of the day name.
I'm pretty sure not every language can guarantee a 3 letter abbreviation
(think: chinese, ...)
Qt uses the definitions from http://cldr.unicode.org
In the Qt sources there is the file locale.xml, and for e.g. Germany it
includes:
<shortDays>So.;Mo.;Di.;Mi.;Do.;Fr.;Sa.;</shortDays>
