I believe it started working with the arrival of a new Akonadi Agent named "Nepomuk Contact Feeder" which is visible on the Akonadi Console Agents tab. Contrary to information supplied about backported functionality for 4.4.3, it does appear possible to send to distribution lists using the Select button and selecting the list from the choice box (in the KMail composer).
