i can confirm this behaviour with Kontact 4.8 rc2 in KDE 4.7.97 Arch Linux
the issue does NOT occur when I directly run the kmail executable.
the column shrinking only happens to the mail listing inside kontact (also with
message viewer below the list). the rss articles or to-do lists for example,
are not affected.
