I find that if I close kontact and restart it, only the "New Message" button shows up. When I close its again, a "Mail - Kontact is not responding." dialogue shows up. Killing it again and again eventually causes something to get freed up and Kontact sort of works as you would expect. So, to me this sounds a lot like a synchronization issue. I also have some Coverity scan reports that show lots of different problems. If someone from KDE wants to see them, email me.
