After a quick read of the relevant RFCs this is optimistic, and ownCloud includes an invalid one that's used by the resource in subsequent calls. I can fix this by re-fetching modified items unconditionally. Then there's the issue of the way the IM address is stored. In the item payload it's done via a special property that's not displayed in the ownCloud web interface.
