einar77 on IRC helped me to go around this problem by resetting Akonadi cache:
akonadiconsole -> browser -> right click on folder / account, "clear akonadi
cache", but this will prompt a full download again of the mail

The above suggestion is not a solution for the problem, but at least it
mitigates the problem by providing a manual fix.
