I am running tests for the code changes I have made. I would be interested
to know if could configure to use gtest only for selected modules in a
directory.

Use --gtext_filter="xxx". You can get more details running any test binary
(usually its name finishes by _unittests) with -h or --help or in general
anything it does not understand.
