CHENNAI: Union minister for IT and communication A Raja on Friday said that he would appeal to the government to extend the tax concessions given to software technology parks under the STPI scheme for one more year. As the tax concessions given to the STPs is expected to end in 2009, Raja said that he would request PM Manmohan Singh and FM P Chidambaram to extend the concessions policy for one more year.
He was delivering the address at the inaugural session of the 'Connect 2008, a three day seminar on the theme, "Global Competitiveness and Equitable Growth - Driven by Innovation", organized by Confederation of Indian Industry. "In order to promote software exports, department of information technology (DIT) has established software technology parks under the STPI scheme. The unique feature of STPI is its transparent policy environment, single window clearance and a clutch of tax concessions", he said. "I can't assure you now, but I will try to speak with PM and FM for extending the scheme for one more year", he said. Referring to the theme of the event, Raja said, "Industry needs sustained growth and it can be achieved only through constant innovation. However, it (innovation) should not be only for the advancement of technology but should also enable common man to gain more knowledge from it".
