Govt may raise Oct-Sep paddy support price to 900 rupees/100 kg
Monday, Sep 22
NEW DELHI - The government may increase the minimum support price
of paddy
in the new procurement season that begins Oct 1 by 50 rupees per 100
kg,
Commerce Secretary G.K. Pillai said today.
The government had set the ad hoc paddy support price at 850
rupees per
100 kg for the new season, but had said the final MSP would be decided
by the
Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council.
Pillai said the government is also planning to further ease export
of
"speciality" rice varieties, such as the some organic varieties grown
in Assam.
The government had banned export of non-basmati rice on Mar 31,
but
allowed export of premium non-basmati rice variety Pusa 1121 earlier
this
month. It had also fixed the minimum export price of basmati at $1,000
a tn
and imposed an export cess of $200 a tn.
Pillai said a government panel will review the export curbs on
rice in
November.
If allowed, rice export in the Oct-Sep season may be capped at 4
mln tn,
he said.
