MUMBAI: Attempts by bulls to stage a come-back failed on Thursday as equities ended in the red but off their day’s low. Realty stocks ended in the green while oil&gas stocks were under pressure.
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 10,581.49, down 227.63 points or 2.11 per cent. It touched an intra-day low of 10,017.80 and a high of 10,787.20. National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 3255.30, down 2.49 per cent. The index touched a high of 3338.85 and a low of 3099.90. BSE Midcap Index fell 1.70 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index was lower by 2.44 per cent. Hindalco Industries (-13.35%), Tata Motors (-11.29%), Mahindra & Mahindra (-9.09%), Tata Consultancy Services (-8.86%) and Reliance Industries (-8.7%) were under pressure. Biggest Sensex gainers were Reliance Communications (7.59%), Hindustan Unilever (6.4%), HDFC (6.27%), Jaiprakash Associates (5.91%), State Bank of India (3.53%) and Sterlite Industries (1.32%). Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index closed 5.15 per cent higher and BSE FMCG Index moved 1.73 per cent up. BSE Oil&gas Index declined 5.57 per cent and BSE Capital Goods Index was down 5.23 per cent. Market breadth was negative on the BSE with 1731 declines and 836 advances.
