MUMBAI: CBI officers recovered Rs 66 lakh during a raid conducted at the office
of Kotak Securities in suburban Malad.
The amount was allegedly stashed there by additional commissioner of income tax
Rakesh Kumar Gupta, who was arrested last week in a graft case. Gupta was held
on December 20 while accepting bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a tax consultant for
clearing his file.
The central investigating agency raided the office of Kotak Securities on
Wednesday and recovered currencies in Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination.
According to CBI special counsel Ejaz Khan, Gupta during interrogation had
confessed to have transferred Rs 96 lakh to Kotak securities to evade detection.
After Gupta's arrest, a chartered accountant Rakesh Makhija was also arrested
for investing Rs 50 lakh given to him by Gupta in 'benami' assets. When Gupta
was arrested, the CBI in addition to the Rs four lakh had also recovered Rs
eight lakh from his office.
According to a CBI spokesman, the income tax officer had allegedly demanded a
bribe of Rs 10 lakh for completing the scrutiny of pending assessment of a
client of the Tax
consultant. The CBI arrested him while he was allegedly accepting the first
installment of the bribe amount, the spokesman said.
